It’s the second major of the season for the golf world! The PGA Championship begins today at Oak Hill Golf Club in Rochester, NY, and former Alabama star Justin Thomas will attempt to defend his title. Thomas won the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma for his second career major (he also won the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in 2017 for his first).
A third PGA title would put Thomas in rare company, passing Phil Mickelson and putting him just behind Tiger Woods, who has four, and all time greats Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen, who each have lifted the Wanamaker Trophy an unbelievable five times.
The favorite entering the week has to be the Masters Champion Jon Rahm, who has been on a run this season so dominant it has drawn comparisons to prime Tiger Woods. Rahm set the PGA Tour earnings record in a season less than halfway through the year and is poised to at least compete for back to back majors.
Thomas will have to put up a wonderful performance at Oak Hill to defend his title and stave off Rahm as well as others such as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who is trying to win his first major since 2014.
It will be a phenomenal week of golf in Rochester.
