There is not much positive to say about the South Alabama Jaguars Sept. 20 showing against Coastal Carolina. Entering the matchup, the Chanticleers had scored just 20 points in 3 weeks. The team from Conway, SC hung 38 on the Jags thanks in large part to winning the turnover battle and the game of field position despite the Jags dominating the time of possession.
Now the 1-3 Jaguars must turn their attention to a pivotal road trip. While a loss to the North Texas Mean Green wouldn’t have much affect on the Jags aspirations for a run at the Sun Belt title it would very much have a chance at derailing the Jags season altogether. If the Jags fall to 1-4 it’d be the worst start since 2019, a year in which they went 2-10 under Steve Campbell.
KNOW YOUR ENEMY – North Texas brings to this game an offense that is explosive. Last year in the first half of this home and home series the Mean Green scored 52 to defeat South Alabama in Mobile 52-38 to open the ’24 season. The Mean Green averaged 33.5 ppg a year ago and through 4 games this season are scoring 47 a week. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker boasts a 71 percent completion percentage with 10 TDs and 1000+ yards through 4 games. The Mean Green are led in rushing by Makenzie McGill but also frequently feature Caleb Hawkins.
WHAT ARE THE ODDS? – The Jaguars enter Saturday as a 13 point underdog with the game’s total set at 63.5 points.
Will be a tall task for the Jags to pull out a huge road upset win but expect the scoreboard to be lit up according to Vegas.
HOW TO WATCH – This Week’s game will be aired on national television with an airtime of 11:00 AM on ESPNU. Matt Schumaker and Dustin Fox will be on the call.
FASHION POLICE
South Alabama will be wearing their white helmets and jerseys with red pants.
