Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this week’s edition, we caught up with UMS Wright Bulldogs head coach Sam Williams, who is leading his team to a very impressive season with a five-game win streak and his team sitting at 5-1 ahead of their biggest test of the year. Coming off a close victory over Glenwood School, UMS will face off this week against Catholic Montgomery in a game which could decide the region.
With both teams at 4-0 in region play, the Bulldogs know what they are up against. Either way though, Williams is happy with the steps his program has made in his second year at the helm.
“Last year we played a lot of good close games and found a way to lose a lot of them and this year it’s kind of been the opposite,” Williams said. “The last few weeks we’ve really started clicking…experience has been huge, we’re doing really well and are right on schedule as a program in year two with where we want to be. We’re finding ways to win games and doing it in a lot of different ways, and I think that speaks to the commitment the kids have made to each other and how hard they’ve pushed and are willing to do whatever it takes.”
Williams praised his young quarterback Max Fowler for the development the offense has made as well as everyone simply doing their job on the offensive side of the ball, with the Bulldogs scoring more than 35 points in each of the last three games. If they can continue that success, they will have a great chance at a deep playoff run.
