Every week on the Joe Bullard Chevrolet Pigskin Pete Scoreboard show, our Friday night crew will be naming the Joe Bullard Team/Coach of the Week, given to the team and coach that had the best performance of the week in the face of adversity in our coverage area across the Gulf Coast.
For our sixth Friday night of the season, this week’s team/coach of the week is the Chickasaw Chieftains and head coach Dedrick Sumpter! Chickasaw earned their first victory of the season with an 8-7 thriller on the road against Fruitdale after a tough 0-4 start to the season with losses to Robertsdale, Flomaton, J.U. Blacksher and Washington County in games the Chieftains were overmatched.
Sumpter, who has spent time in the area with nearly a decade as Williamson’s head coach as well as serving as Blount’s interim coach in 2021. He arrived to Chickasaw after spending the last two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Pike County.
Last season, Chickasaw went to the playoffs but lost in the first round and former head coach Carl Herring announced his resignation. While it has been a process for Sumpter, a first win of the season has to feel good for the whole program. Next week, the Chieftains hit the road again with a huge game against Central Hayneville, also coming off their first victory of the season, to try to make it two in a row.
Congratulations to the Chickasaw Chieftains and head coach Dedrick Sumpter on being named this week’s Joe Bullard Chevrolet Team/Coach of the Week!
