Greer’s Markets Game of the Week Preview: Jackson @ Baker

High school football season is officially well underway on the Gulf Coast this week with our fifth stop of the Greer’s Markets Game of the Week taking us out to west Mobile and Baker High School for their matchup against Jackson.

It’s a marquee non-region matchup, with the Hornets sitting at 3-0 with a 2-0 start in Class 7A Region 1 coming off wins against Davidson last week, Alma Bryant in week two, and Theodore in week one. Jackson, on the other hand, is 2-1 and 1-0 in Class 5A Region 1 with their loss coming in week one against Saraland in what was an admirable effort from the Aggies. They defeated Demopolis and Escambia County the last two weeks.

Historically speaking, Jackson has Baker’s number with a 6-2 all-time record against the Hornets, but Baker has won the last two matchups in 2018 and 2019. Jackson has actually not defeated Baker since 1981 with no matchups between then and 2018.

This time around, the Aggies boast one of the best quarterbacks in the entire state in junior Landon Duckworth. Duckworth was previously committed to South Carolina but backed off that pledge and will have offers anywhere he wants to go.

For Baker, Juan Johnson is off to the strong start in his first season as head coach, taking over for Steve Normand to lead the Hornet program. He will now try to get his team off to a 4-0 start for the second straight season.

You’ll be able to hear Michael Brauner and Scott Todd Thursday night on the call at 7:00 p.m. on 105.5 WNSP or on the Sound of Mobile app!
