High school football season is officially well underway on the Gulf Coast this week with our fifth stop of the Greer’s Markets Game of the Week taking us out to Saraland High School for their huge 6A rivalry matchup against Spanish Fort.
One of the most heated rivalries on the Gulf Coast, these two teams have been the talk of the town during the biggest games of the season for a while now.
They first met in 2013 in what was a heated state semifinal matchup in 5A which Spanish Fort won 24-14 en route to a perfect season, then both teams would move up to 6A Region 1 in 2014 and have had hotly contested matchups ever since.
Since 2013, they have faced off a total of 13 times including three state semi-final matchups. Spanish Fort is 8-5 overall, but has lost the last three matchups as the Spartans have ascended to be one of the powerhouse programs in the state. Last season, Saraland went into Spanish Fort and came away with a 49-7 victory, and the Toros have not been victorious since 2020.
It will be Chase Smith’s third chance to defeat Jeff Kelly’s Spartans team in a game that will have the eyes of Gulf Coast upon it.
You’ll be able to hear Michael Brauner and Brian Genard Friday night on the call at 7:00 p.m. on 105.5 WNSP or on the Sound of Mobile app!
