Week one has come and gone on the Gulf Coast, and with it, high school football season is officially in full swing with the best time of year that we all wait for finally now here!
Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Green and Phillips Pigskin Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.
This week, the honor went to Baldwin County Tigers quarterback Ray Johnson after their first season-opening win since 2021 in one of the surprises of the week. Johnson was sensational, completing nine of his 20 passing attempts for nearly 250 yards with four touchdowns through the air and another one on the ground.
“This is what we thought we would get out of Ray. As a first time starter, you don’t know, but he’s not a me guy he’s a we guy….what I love about him is his gunslinger mentality. He fits the ball into tight windows and has confidence in himself, he’s really impressive.”
The Tigers defeated the Red Raiders 40-22, but now the schedule gets incredibly tough with three straight road games against Fairhope, Theodore and Spanish Fort before hosting Saraland to end the month of September.
If Johnson can keep playing like this, perhaps Baldwin County could be one of the surprise teams in the are this season.
