Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this week’s edition, we caught up with longtime area veteran and T.R. Miller head coach Ronnie Cottrell to talk about his Tigers’ 2-2 start in 3A Region 1.
“We’re making progress,” Cottrell said, saying he is trying to rebuild the program to its heyday. “We’re the winningest program in the history of the state of Alabama, but we have not won a state championship in more than 20 years. So we’re trying to build the varsity, junior varsity and middle school programs to get back to that…but it’s been fun to come home.”
It’s a tough Region 1 which includes teams like Jackson, Excel, Escambia County and Opp, who was just able to defeat T.R. Miller this past week in what was a very close game.
The Tigers will face off against Hillcrest-Evergreen this week in a non-region matchup before getting right back into it with Excel the following week. It is going to be a very tight race down the stretch in the region not only to win it but also to make the playoffs, and Cottrell is gonna get right back to work trying to get his alma mater back on top of the state.
