The Odds on Alabama’s Starting QB May Surprise You

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson (15) throws the ball during Practice at Hank Crisp Indoor Facility in Birmingham, AL on Friday, Apr 14, 2023.

Coming off SEC Media Days, the hottest Alabama topic going in was obvious, and it’s not going to change with Nick Saban not giving an inch on the conversation. The question of who is going to start at quarterback will continue to be asked all summer until Saban ultimately names a QB1.

With the opener against Middle Tennessee State just 38 days away, BetOnlineAG has released their latest odds for who will take the first snaps for Alabama when they take the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Of the three possibilities, Ty Simpson is the betting favorite at +105.

Followed by Simpson is Notre Dame transfer Tyler Buchner at +140, and surprisingly the underdog is Jalen Milroe at +300. Milroe is of course the only one with actual playing experience at Alabama, filling in for the injured Bryce Young against Arkansas and starting the following week against Texas A&M.

While Milroe showed flashes, he also showed limitations as a passer and has thus far been unable to separate from the rest of the pack in the QB battle this offseason. Obviously neither has Simpson, otherwise Buchner would not have been brought in.

No matter who ends up starting this season, Alabama is taking a step back at the position this season after the Bryce Young era. In order to compete for a national championship this season, the Crimson Tide will need all positions around the QB to step up.
