Every week on the Joe Bullard Chevrolet Pigskin Pete Scoreboard show, our Friday night crew will be naming the Joe Bullard Team/Coach of the Week, given to the team and coach that had the best performance of the week in the face of adversity in our coverage area across the Gulf Coast.
For our first Friday night of the season, the Saraland Spartans and head coach Jeff Kelly receive this distinct honor following their 35-27 win over the Jackson Aggies. The matchup was poised to be one of the best quarterback matchups in the state between fellow superstars K.J. Lacey of Saraland and Landon Duckworth of Jackson.
The pair didn’t disappoint, with Duckworth throwing for nearly 200 yards as he led a comeback against one of the best teams in the state in Saraland and made the game close at the end.
But it was Lacey who really shined, throwing for over 200 yards and three touchdowns in just the first quarter alone. Spartans receiver CD Gill had a massive showing as well with 175 yards and three touchdowns of his own.
Friday’s win was Saraland’s 26th consecutive win at Spartan Stadium.
“I’m so proud of our guys for finding a way to get it done and expecting to win. There were a lot of great football players on that field tonight,” Kelly told AL.com after the victory.
The Spartans will host the Blount Leopards next week in a game that will be able to be heard on 96.5 The Crab!
