High school football season is officially BACK on the Gulf Coast this week with our second stop of the Greer’s Markets Game of the Week taking us not very far to St. Paul’s!
The Saints are hosting a very familiar foe from just down Old Shell Road in the UMS Wright Bulldogs in what will be the 46th meeting in the Battle of Old Shell.
The records between the two rivals are staggeringly close with the Saints just needing a win on Friday night to pull the all-time series between the two sqauds to an even 46-46.
Ham Barnett is entering his third season as the St. Paul’s head coach and has split the meetings 1-1 so far, winning 14-7 last season on the road. Notably, Terry Curtis is entering his 25th season as the Bulldogs’ head coach and has a record of 14-10 in the rivalry. Curtis’ teams defeated St. Paul’s in his first four seasons from 1999-2022 and lost five in a row from 2010-2014.
It’s safe to say the rivalry is fairly heated and extremely competitive, and in order to grab a win, the Saints will need a huge performance on defense from superstar linebacker Anthony “Tank” Jones who holds offers from just about every school in the country.
Jones will do his best to rattle the Bulldogs young sophomore starting quarterback Max Fowler, who will be making his debut on Friday night.
It should be a phenomenal night of football on Friday at St. Paul’s, and it’s just the beginning of what will be a huge schedule for our WNSP crew this season!
Be sure to tune into the broadcast from Michael Brauner and Brian Genard on 105.5 WNSP or on the Sound of Mobile app!
