High school football season is officially BACK on the Gulf Coast this week with our first stop of the Greer’s Markets Game of the Week taking us across the bay to the Eastern Shore and Fairhope High School!
The Pirates will host Spanish Fort in a rematch of last year’s opening game where Fairhope was victorious by a score of 17-14 on a late fourth quarter long rushing score by running back Desmond Thomas to put the Pirates on top for good.
All time, the series is dead even with Fairhope winning the last two including an absolutely wild game winning interception during the 2022 season opener.
The Toros have not defeated the Pirates since 2021 when Ben Blackmon’s team took down the Pirates by a score of 21-10. Toros head coach Chase Smith is entering his third season at Spanish Fort and will hope this season to get over the hump of taking down Fairhope in week one.
Tim Carter, on the other hand for Fairhope, is entering his 10th season coaching the Pirates and will look to secure his third win in a row over his Eastern Shore rival.
To do that, he will have to limit the Toros’ talented junior quarterback, Aaden Shamburger, who was fantastic in last year’s game in his starting debut before the offense went stagnant in the second half.
Fairhope will be starting senior quarterback Jackson Robertson, who took over the job last season starting in week four, but Carter says that sophomore backup Trey Garner will get playing time as well.
It should be a phenomenal night of football on Thursday at Fairhope, and it’s just the beginning of what will be a huge schedule for our WNSP crew this season!
