Don’t overreact to what you see at Auburn A-Day

In this corner you have Cam Newton. Eventual Heisman Trophy winner. National Champion. NFL MVP. NFC champion.

In the other corner you have Kiehl Frazier, Kodi Burns, Daniel Cobb, Gabe Gross and Frank McIntosh.

Despite all of his credentials, Newton was never the MVP of Auburn’s annual A-Day spring game. The other five quarterbacks all did earn the award.

So, what does that mean?
For one thing, it illustrates that you and I and everybody else who follows college football in this state are probably going to overreact to what we see at Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday. Some mostly unknown player is going to star in the game. But that doesn’t mean he’s going to be the next Cam Newton. In fact, history tells us he’s more likely to be like Frank McIntosh.

If the offense has any success at all Saturday it’s likely going to be because Gus Malzahn set it up to be that way. With bad weather forecast for Auburn and bad intentions held by the stout Auburn defense, don’t panic if the offense looks mostly uninspiring.

That’s how Newton looked in his one and only A-Day game. And that turned out OK.
