South Alabama star cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. has been named to the preseason All-American second team by Pro Football Network for the second time in his career. This adds to a growing list of preseason accolades for Luter, who has already been named preseason All-Sun Belt, as well as appearing on the watch list for the Jim Thorpe award, given to the best defensive back in the nation, and the Bednarik award, given to the best defensive player in college football.
Luter returns to school after an unbelievable junior season in which he had four interceptions and ten other passes defended, culminating in finishing third in the nations in passes defended per game. He also set the program record for most interceptions in a season since the Jags moved up to FBS in 2012.
Luter has a chance to be truly special in 2022 and solidify himself as a top prospect in April’s NFL Draft. He will be the anchor to a Jags defense that must perform better this season than it did in 2021 if it wants to win more games in year one of the Kane Wommack era. While preseason honors are certainly nice, Luter will have to go out and prove again this season that he truly is among the nation’s elite cornerbacks.
