Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this week’s edition, the guys were joined by first-year St. Luke’s Wildcats head coach Rick Cauley after his team lost a week one heartbreaker 21-20 following a failed two-point conversion at the end which would have won the game. Trailing by 14 late in the game, the Wildcats made a huge comeback and ultimately fell to Fort Dale Academy on the final play of the game.
“Those kids always play hard at St. Luke’s and they got back in the game,” Cauley said, giving his kids a ton of credit for the way they were able to fight back as well as taking the blame for not preparing them quite enough for a moment like that.
Cauley, who was a longtime head coach at Davidson and around the area, did not mince words when asked why he decided to return to being a head coach. It comes down to a passion for the game and a desire to do what he does best.
“I really enjoy coaching and being around the kids,” he said, adding that he hopes to build something special at St. Luke’s and stick around for a long period of time.
This week, the Wildcats will start region play against Snook Academy and after coming so close to tasting victory in week one, the team will be hungry to finish the job this time around and get off to a good start in the standings.
