Bryant Bank Player of the Week: Gunner Rivers, St. Michael

Week seven of the high school football season has come and gone, and the Pigskin Pete crew has named a new Bryant Bank Player of the Week.

This week, the honor goes to St. Michael quarterback Gunner Rivers for his huge performance to help the Cardinals take down Mobile Christian in a massive region victory in 4A Region 1. Rivers was nearly perfect in the victory, finishing 18 of 19 with 272 yards and two touchdowns through the air as the Cardinals defeated the Leopards 45-35.

The win brings the team to 6-1, their best start under head coach and father of Gunner, legendary NFL quarterback Phillip Rivers. The head coach joined WNSP on Monday to talk about Gunner and the team’s performance and the level of pride he has with the team’s tremendous beginning to the season.

“It was one of those games where it went exactly how you hoped,” Rivers said on beating Mobile Christian. “It gives us a chance to have an opportunity to host a home playoff game if we can be at our best and beat Orange Beach next which would be a huge deal for our school.”

Rivers’ team is in second place in the region following a lopsided defeat last week against Jackson, who looks like one of the best teams in the entire state regardless of classification. The Cardinals are having a tremendous season and both Coach Rivers and quarterback Rivers are going to try to keep it going.
