Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this edition, we caught up with McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets volleyball coach Kate Wood fresh off a fifth consecutive state title for the program
“We have had a lot of really talented teams that have been successful, but the matches that we played and the quality of teams we played, you can really see the dominance of this group and it was really impressive,” Wood said. “The Briarwood match in the finals was one of our most complete of the season…that team also beat 6A state champion Bob Jones in the regular season, they were really good, we just played our best match of the season and were better.”
The Jackets swept the state tournament and went 9-0 to claim the state title, an incredibly impressive feat to secure the 26th state title in the history of the program.
Wood graduates four impactful seniors from this team and will have to try to find a way to replace them next year, but she is confident in who does return to the program being able to put another great team on the court next season.
