Bryant Bank Player of the Week: Devin McKenzie, Spanish Fort

The regular season has come and gone on the Gulf Coast, and with it, high school football season is headed to the playoffs with the best time of year that we all wait for finally now here!

Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Green and Phillips Pigskin Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.

This week, the honor went to Spanish Fort Toros junior wide receiver Devin McKenzie for his huge night in Spanish Fort’s 35-14 victory over St. Paul’s that closed out the regular season. He had 182 total receiving yards and three touchdown passes from senior quarterback Jaylyn Thibodeaux.

“Devin has done a great job for us, he’s a great young man and really just came alive in the second half after we made some adjustments at halftime,” Toros head coach Chase Smith said.

With a 7-3 record on the season despite having such a young team with just five seniors, Smith was able to guide Spanish Fort to a third place finish in Class 5A Region 1 behind just Saraland and Gulf Shores.

Because of finishing third, it’s a road trip this week in round one of the playoffs for the Toros, traveling up north to Helena where they will try to pull off an impressive victory against a very good team.

Congratulations to McKenzie and the entire Spanish Fort Toros team on the honor and a huge win, and best of luck here in the playoffs!
