Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this edition, we caught up Alma Bryant head coach Bart Sessions, who has the Hurricanes in the playoffs for the first time during his tenure. It is the first playoff appearance overall for the school in more than a decade, last making it back in 2013. With a region record of 2-4, Alma Bryant was able secure the fourth seed in 6A Region 1.
They are scheduled to travel north to Opelika for the first round of the playoffs.
“We did not finish as high in the region as we wanted to, but we are thrilled to be in the postseason. The first step is getting into the playoffs and then you never know what can happen,” Sessions said. “We’re in and we’re excited to be in.”
The Hurricanes have a week off this week following their victory over Davidson where they will rest up and get ready for the first round where they face a massive challenge on the road against a very good team, and Sessions clearly knows the challenge he is up against. Still though, this is a huge step for the Hurricanes program and another step in the development of a school which has not had a lot of success as of late.
Alma Bryant will undoubtedly be a big underdog in their playoff game, but this a role they are comfortable in and will go up there with a whole lot of belief they can return with a win.
