Week nine has come and gone on the Gulf Coast, and with it, high school football season is officially in full swing with the best time of year that we all wait for finally now here!
Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Green and Phillips Pigskin Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.
This week, the honor went to Saraland Spartans senior quarterback Jamison Roberts for his big night in the 56-14 victory over Spanish Fort which secured Saraland a home playoff game here in two weeks in the first round. Roberts had an absurd night, completing 21 of his 27 passing attempts for 409 yards with six total touchdowns, four through the air and two with his legs.
“We knew going into the week that they were a very stingy and physical defense, so we knew that we were gonna have to be more physical than they were,” Roberts said when he joined WNSP on Monday morning. “Big games shouldn’t scare you if you have the coaching staff we have to get you ready for the moment.”
Chris Cunningham was able to catch 8 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns while Larry Pettway had eight more for 128 yards and a touchdown.
Over the last seven games, the Spartans offense led by Roberts has been able to score more than 60 points per game.
Saraland now has a record of 8-1 and will try to finish off the season on the right note.
Hosting Auburn this week, the Spartans will try to get set for the playoffs where they will host Pelham the following week in the first game.
Congratulations to Roberts and the entire Saraland Spartans team on the honor and a huge win, and best of luck the rest of the season!
