Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this week’s edition, we caught up with Gulf Shores Dolphins head coach Mark Hudspeth, who is about to wrap up the regular season this week against Bayside Academy where they will try to stay undefeated and finish the regular season 10-0. It’s been an outstanding year for the program, winning 5A Region 1 by upsetting Saraland on their home field and not stumbling anywhere else.
Hudspeth says that just because the region is locked up though, Gulf Shores still wants to end the season on the right note and continue their momentum headed into the playoffs, where they will host Ramsay in the first round.
“This is an important game for us because we don’t want to lose momentum,” Hudspeth said. “I firmly believe that sometimes even during the regular season when you’re playing well and you have an open date or starters don’t play, sometimes you can lose a little bit of momentum and I think the same thing can happen by holding kids out.
“So coming into this game, we have every intention of playing everyone we have to try to win this football game against a really good team. Hopefully that can springboard us into the playoffs with some momentum and we’ll see what we can do.”
The Dolphins have allowed just over 10 points a game all year long, but the defense is going to be tested this week against a very efficient and lethal Bayside Academy offense.
