Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner: McGill-Toolen Baseball’s Tim Becker

Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.

You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.

In this week’s edition, we caught up with McGill-Toolen baseball coach Tim Becker ahead of their playoff doubleheader against Northridge which was moved from Friday due to potential weather issues as both teams try to advance and take another step closer to a Blue Map.

The games are played as a best two of three format with the winning team advancing, and the hope is to get it all in before the weather comes.

All season long though, the Yellow Jackets have been playing with heavy hearts after the tragic loss of their teammate Will Glass, and in each game, a senior has carried Will’s No. 13 jersey into the dugout where it has remained with the team and traveled to away games.

“He was one of my favorite players because he was such a great young man,” Becker said when asked about the significance of having the jersey in the dugout. “It kind of gives our players a sense of peace to know it is a game and to know that we’re playing for him too. We talk about Will a lot even though he’s not with us anymore and his jersey will be hanging in the dugout today so he is with us.”

The Yellow Jackets are going to attempt to bring a Blue Map back to the Gulf Coast, but they are doing it to try to honor the memory of their teammate and playing for him the rest of the way.
