Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner: New NFHS Hall of Fame Inductee Steve Savarese

Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.

You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.

It was a special edition this week as we caught up with former Daphne and McGill-Toolen head coach as well as longtime AHSAA director (2007-21) Steve Savarese after it was announced this week that he is headed into the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame.

Savarese arrived at Daphne in 1996 and would post an incredible 77-14 record including a perfect season in 2001 to win the state title before eventually taking the McGill-Toolen job in 2004.

“I was very fortunate in my position to follow three wonderful people,” Savarese humbly said about his time leading up the AHSAA. “I thank God for allowing me to go to Daphne, what a wonderful place to coach. Kenny King played for me and was there when I arrived. I love Daphne…it became our future home as our kids and grandkids live in Daphne so what a blessing it was…I loved Daphne and I loved McGill, what great places to work…I could have stayed at McGill-Toolen for the rest of my life had the [AHSAA director] position not opened up, so I’ve been very blessed.

“I’m honored for all the people and member schools that I have worked with. No one does anything individually and I’ve worked with great staff members, great board members…I’m thankful that I had the opportunity.”

With an overall record of 287-84 and 220-74 during his time coaching in the state of Alabama, Savarese has one of the most decorated careers the area has ever seen and was instrumental in numerous developments for high school sports in the state while at the AHSAA.

From the AHSAA’s Revenue Share initiative to moving the Super 7 to Auburn and Alabama and countless other things as the AHSAA director, his impact both on and off the field was immense.
