Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner: New Spanish Fort HC Andre Epps

Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.

You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.

In this week’s edition, we talked to new Spanish Fort boy’s basketball coach Andre Epps, who announced over the weekend he was headed to the Eastern Shore after a very successful stint at Murphy. Epps gave some insight into the decision and talked about both his sadness of leaving Murphy as well as his excitement to arrive at Spanish Fort.

“It’s very bittersweet to leave Murphy High School,” Epps said before sharing his belief that he leaves the Panthers in a great spot set up for success for years to come. “The Spanish Fort job to me they have great community, great admin, great kids, I think they needed a coach to go in and kinda do the same thing I did at Murphy. I wanna bring excitement back, I wanna get people excited about basketball and I think we can do that there.

“The facilities are amazing, but most importantly there’s a lot of great support behind it…these guys are excited and willing to give me everything I need to be successful and that kind of played a huge part.”

He also revealed what Spanish Fort fans can expect from his program.

“We’re gonna play together and we’re gonna play hard. We’re gonna build a bond off the court because if you’re close off the court you’re harder to beat on the court.”

Epps continued to talk about how tough it was to leave Murphy and how he will always be there for his kids who he had to make the difficult decision to leave and head across the bay while also revealing his belief that the Toros are still going to face Murphy in the opening game of the year.

It’s a new and exciting chapter for basketball in the area and should be a great story worth following next year.
