High school football season is ripping by on the Gulf Coast, and the ninth week of the year brought some very exciting action to the area as teams got back on the field with a great number of them continuing play in their respective regions.
Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Joe Bullard Chevrolet Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.
This week, the honor went to McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets running back Ladarien Miller for his huge showing during McGill’s surprising and dominating win over St. Paul’s. Miller toted the rock 28 times — 19 of the carries coming in the second half — and ran for 123 yards and four touchdowns.
“Ladarien was a key for us in the victory being able to run the ball effectively especially in the second half, but he’d be the first one to tell you he couldn’t do it without those guys up front,” head coach David Faulkner told WNSP Monday morning.
The Yellow Jackets move to 3-3 in region play and 4-4 overall, bringing about a major logjam of teams in 6A Region 1. Saraland and Theodore are undefeated, but all four of McGill, Spanish Fort, St. Paul’s and Gulf Shores are 3-3 and vying for the final two spots.
As fate would have it, the Yellow Jackets take on Spanish Fort this week in a game that will be broadcast on WNSP this Friday night from The Lipp!
Congratulations to Miller and the entire McGill team on taking home this week’s version of the prestigious award!
