WNSP Athlete of the Week: Marlon Miller, Blount

Each week during the Road to the Alabama High School State Championships, Mark, Lee, and Michael will feature an “Athlete of the Week” right here!

With our Road to the Alabama High School State Championships fully underway, the fifth stop the Opening Kickoff made was at Blount High School where our Athlete of the Week is senior Marlon Miller!

Marlon is a star in multiple events for the Leopard track and field team and is gunning for the school record 400 meter. Currently, his personal record is 48.81 seconds, and the school record is 47.30 seconds.

He also excels in the 200 meter, ranking No. 8 in the state as well as No. 1 in 6A. Incredibly, Marlon has not lost an outdoor race since May.

Marlon’s coach Brian Wilson offered extremely high praise for Marlon, describing him as the leader of the team.

“Marlon Miller, he is the leader of the team. Everyone listens to him when he speaks and they follow him because he does what he says. He’s putting in what he says on the track, and he’s doing it in the classroom as well,” Wilson said.

Marlon spoke about the importance of technique as he looks to improve, get faster, and make a push at the school record.

“It’s a lot of technique. You’ve gotta really know how to run the 400 to be able to get a good time. I’m working hard,” he said, even revealing that he does it all with a chronic asthma condition he deals with.

Marlon has held an offer from the University of Montevallo, but just last week received one from South Alabama here in Mobile and he said he is strongly considering accepting the offer from South.
