WNSP Athlete of the Week: Ethan Santos, Baker

Each week during the Road to the Alabama High School State Championships, Mark, Lee, and Michael will feature an “Athlete of the Week” right here!

With our Road to the Alabama High School State Championships now fully underway, the fourth stop the Opening Kickoff made was at Baker High School where our Athlete of the Week is senior Ethan Santos!

Ethan is the leadoff hitter who doubles as a pitcher and shortstop for Baker’s baseball team. He has helped the Hornets get off to a 14-3 start this season in large part due to absolutely raking at the plate.

Through the first 17 games, Ethan has been to the plate 57 times and in those plate appearances has 27 hits. This is good for a ridiculous batting average of .474.

His on base percentage is even more impressive, sitting at .565 along with a .596 slugging percentage, 1.162 OPS, 12 RBIs, and just two strikeouts.

His head coach, Tyler Minto, described Santos as a “disciplined hitter who has shown up day in and day out this year.”

Minto said that Santos has stepped up in all three phases of the game as a hitter, a pitcher, and a fielder.

“Whatever you need him to do, he steps up and does it,” Minto said.

A disciplined hitter and teammate indeed, Ethan spoke about how he is able to continue getting better.

“It all starts from coming to practice day one and putting in the work. But I couldn’t do it without my brothers on the field,” Ethan said.

As the leadoff hitter, Ethan says he wants to get things started at the top and help his team to score runs when he can.

He spoke about how much his senior year with the teammates he has been playing with since childhood means.

“My fondest memory is just being with my guys. We’ve been playing ball since tee ball, and grew up together playing travel ball. For us to finally be here our senior year, we just wanna go out with a bang,” he said.

Ethan is going to attend Bishop State right here in Mobile next year to continue his academic and athletic career.
