Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.
This week, we caught up with St. Paul’s Baseball coach Andy Robbins amid his team’s hot start to the season and his catcher John Stowers — an Auburn commit — having a tremendous year, even blasting three home runs lately.
“Not at all,” Robbins said when asked if he was surprised to see Stowers hit three home runs in a game recently. “The best way I can describe it is just bombs…he’s such a great kid with scouts all over the place, he’s gonna do the right thing…[John] has that insatiable will to win, that’s just what he does.”
Beyond Stowers and the rest of the team, Robbins also praised team leadership both in terms of players and the coaching staff.
“We have a bunch of guys, great leadership with our seniors…such a great coaching staff. I’m not smart but I’m smart enough to get good people around me.”
St. Paul’s is off to a 12-3 start ahead of area play beginning next week against Vigor. Before that, it will be two more games against both Mary G. Montgomery and Baker starting on Thursday night.
