Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.
In this week’s edition, we caught up with St. Luke’s baseball coach Mike Szymanski ahead of them opening 2A region play against Clarke County.
“We only have 14 players on our roster grades 7 through 12,” Szymanski revealed of his very young Wildcats squad before running through some of the schedule and explaining the 6-7 record with some impressive wins on the resume. “You win with pitching and defense, it’s hard to work all phases of the game.”
Szymanski talked about the region and revealed how strong of a program Bayshore Christian is at St. Luke’s tries to chase them down with only two starters returning from last year’s team.
When his team takes the field on Wednesday against Clarke County, Szymanski will be coaching for his 700th victory in his career that has spanned over four decades. A love for the game and coaching his kids is what keeps him going.
“I think I’ve coached in [over 1,000 games], I have a passion for the game…I like the comradery with the coaches and I enjoy being around the kids…I’ve done it for 42 years and still going strong.”
The Wildcats have a three-game set against Clarke County before facing Washington County and Blacksher over the coming weeks in what promises to be an exciting season for St. Luke’s Baseball.
