Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.
In this week’s edition, we caught up with Saraland Spartans softball coach Donna Sunnycalb, who is overseeing another tremendous season in The Land with a 32-5 record and a great chance at bringing home a Blue Map as the top team in all of 6A.
Over the last week, the Spartans have dropped a couple of very close ones to some of the best teams in the state in Daphne and Thompson, but Sunnycalb is not letting the defeats get her team down.
“I learned that my team is very resilient,” Sunnycalb said of the Thompson loss. “We talk all the time about not holding onto the mistakes and errors and going to the next play, and that’s exactly what they did. It’s hard to say you’re proud of a loss, but there were so many other good things to take from that.”
Two of Saraland’s five losses come via Thompson, a team they could end up playing this weekend again in yet another tournament ahead of the postseason. Sunnycalb believes these as well as last year’s playoff defeat has her team ready for the state tournament this year.
“Last year when we left Oxford as the runner up, it left my kids hungry….it takes the entire group to win championships and I feel like we have a great group in the dugout to make that happen.”
Softball fans across the area had better pay attention to the Spartans over the coming month as they pursue a state title.
