Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.
This week, we caught up with Saraland head coach Dru Powell ahead of his Spartans’ Final Four game on Wednesday afternoon against Oxford for the right to advance to the state title game. Saraland defeated Murphy 47-46 in a thriller to earn the right to go to Birmingham and fight for a state title, and Powell could not be prouder of his team.
“With a group like this I just really trust them to be honest,” he said. “Two of our last three games came down to the final possession, and fortunately we have some really great players. I’m just really proud of them and they are fun to be around, a great group of guys I’ve coached this season.”
When it comes to prepping for Oxford, Powell says he is trusting the preparation the team has been doing since June rather than trying to do anything different with the stakes now so high and the level of physicality being increased.
The game will tip off at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday and the winner will face either Calera or Cullman for all the marbles in 6A.
