Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner: Orange Beach Softball’s Shane Alexander

Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.

You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.

In this week’s edition, we caught up with the head coach of one of the most impressive athletic programs in the entire nation, Orange Beach softball head coach Shane Alexander who has the Makos going for their sixth straight state title with a record of 30-1 on the season right now.

It’s almost difficult to comprehend the level to which Orange Beach softball is winning not just games and area titles, but state titles as well as they dominate everyone in their path. Alexander has done a nice job of keeping things in perspective though despite all the success.

“When we first started this, a lot of these players were seventh and eighth graders that are now seniors,” Alexander said. “We have some young players that have fit in to what we’re trying to do and it’s just kept going…we’ve got some kids that can swing it, there’s not an easy out in the lineup. We’ve spent a lot of time hitting and base running, and when the chance comes up these kids usually come through. But the thing I like is our defense is elite. We have tremendous pitching and tremendous fielders.”

Clearly, the story of the sixth consecutive title is something softball fans around the area want to pay very close attention to over the coming weeks as they pursue yet another Blue Map.
