Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark and Lee will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
You can catch all of it right here on WNSP.com or live during The Opening Kickoff.
In this week’s edition, we caught up with LeFlore Rattlers head boys basketball coach Johnny Mayhane ahead of his team’s appearance in the Final Four following the 53-47 victory over Charles Henderson to advance to the huge stage.
The Rattlers have won 11 straight games headed into the Final Four and had a huge upset over No. 1 seed Williamson to get the right to play Charles Henderson. They will now face Wenonah with a spot in the state title game on the line in what promises to be a tremendous fight in Class 5A where the winner will face the winner between Sylacauga and Guntersville.
“We definitely can match up with them,” Mayhane said of the huge test that Wenonah presents. “When we go into this game we have to make sure our personnel and coaches know what to do because once you get to the Final Four everything gets a little bit tighter…I just give them the encouragement to go out there and play and do what we do and take in the moment. Not a lot of teams make it this far and these guys have earned it.”
The game will be played Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. after the other semifinal while the championship will be played this weekend.
