Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this week’s edition, the guys were joined by Gulf Shores head coach Mark Hudspeth, who faces Spanish Fort this week in a battle of undefeated teams in Class 5A Region 1 playing for first place in the region and potentially a region title. The Dolphins have been one of the best teams in this area throughout the year, sitting at 7-0 including a signature road win at Saraland earlier this year.
While the Toros still of course have to face Saraland, the head to head victory over the Spartans puts Gulf Shores in the pole position right now.
“We’re playing good, complimentary football, we haven’t had a turnover in three weeks, we play good defense and special teams,” Hudspeth said when asked how his team is undefeated right now. “We have very good players, the kids are playing very hard and doing absolutely everything we ask.”
With only two more region games on the schedule including the road trip to Spanish Fort this week before returning home to host Theodore, the Dolphins close the regular season with a non-region home game against Bayside Academy where they will try to potentially complete an undefeated regular season if they can take care of business the next two weeks.
Hudspeth is taking everything one game at a time though, and the goal this week is beating Spanish Fort and taking complete control of the region.
