Tobias and Comer Coaches Corner: Gretchen Boykin, Spanish Fort

Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.

In this edition, we caught up with Spanish Fort Toros volleyball coach Gretchen Boykin, who just led her program to their third consecutive state championship.

“They know every year it’s gonna get harder and harder, but they’re a really focused group of girls and a great group to coach,” Boykin said. “Their mentality, their focus, their willingness to do what it takes to get there. They just had all the tools to be able to do that.”

Boykin talked about adversity like an early season loss in the opening tournament to a powerhouse from the state of Tennessee as well as a loss in late September to McGill-Toolen and an ugly loss to Jasper. She said that losing to Jasper was the best thing that could have happened to the team though and allowed her to make lineup adjustments which helped the team not lose again for the rest of the year.

The Toros have established themselves as a volleyball powerhouse not just in this area, but around the state, and with Coach Boykin at the helm, continued success should follow.
