WNSP Athlete of the Week: Etienne Duchesne, St. Michael

Each week at the start of the Road to the Alabama High School State Championships, Mark and Lee will feature an “Athlete of the Week” right here!

With our Road to the Alabama High School State Championships now underway, the first stop the Opening Kickoff made was at St. Michael Catholic High School, where our Athlete of the Week is senior Etienne Duchesne!

Etienne is both a soccer and basketball player for the Cardinals. He has been critical in the last two victories for the soccer team, with an assist in a 3-2 victory over Dothan last Saturday as well as a huge goal in an area victory over UMS Wright on Tuesday night, a game the Cardinals won 2-0.

Etienne appeared on the Opening Kickoff on Friday morning and talked about how basketball benefits his soccer career.

“Quick decision making, obviously basketball is a smaller court and you’ve got guys right on you so I think that I can take that and transfer it on the soccer field. It helps me stay ahead of others,” Duchesne said.

He also discussed what it means to be recognized amongst his peers as St. Michael’s athlete of the week.

“Obviously it’s a cool thing. It’s a great confidence booster, I love it.”

Etienne said that he has not decided what he is going to do about the next level, saying that he is deciding between Auburn and Benedictine College, where he would play soccer if he was to attend.

Congratulations to Etienne Duchesne on being named our Athlete of the Week in the first 2024 edition of the Road to the Alabama High School State Championships!
