South Alabama vs. Coastal Carolina Preview

TALE OF THE TAPE

The Conference Opener is here and set for kickoff at 6 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 20th.

The South Alabama Jaguars enter conference play with a 1-2 overall record. To most South Alabama fans, this result to this point was expected. The way the Jags looked in the first 3 games may have been unexpected.

A dominant win against Morgan State, a 2 point heart breaker against elite Group of 5 program Tulane, and a respectable 31-15 defeat to in-state SEC Power Auburn has gotten South Alabama to week 4 in which they open conference play under the lights of Hancock-Whitney Stadium against a very different kind of 1-2 team, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

One of the notable strengths for South Alabama has been Junior Quarterback Bishop Davenport. Through the team’s first 3 outings Davenport has thrown for 6 Touchdowns to just 1 INT. On the opposite sideline come Saturday, The Chants have struggled at the Quarterback position. Both MJ Morris and Tad Hudson have taken significant snaps but neither have a TD completion and have combined for 6 INT’s. The Chanticleers have been abysmal offensively with just 20 combined points through 3 weeks.

WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

For South Alabama, the Jaguars have established themselves as a leader of public perception in the Sun Belt Conference. The Jaguars have propelled themselves to 4th in betting odds to win the conference in 2025 (per Vegasnsider.com – bet365, BetMGM, DraftKings). Just James Madison, Texas State, and Old Dominion have shorter odds according to the line-makers.

For Saturday’s game the Jaguars are sitting as a 14 point favorite over the lowly Chanticleers.
