South Alabama Baseball Uses Late Inning Surge to Take Down Alabama at Stanky Field

The South Alabama Jaguars pick up the midweek win against the Alabama Crimson Tide 6-3 in front of a huge crowd at Stanky Field on St.Patrick’s Day.

The Jags trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the 7th before exploding for 4 runs in the frame. Stewart Puckett singled with the bases loaded to tie the game up at 3, then Blake Guerin followed that up with a two-RBI single of his own to put the Jags up 5-3.

Ethan Melton tacked on another run in the 8th inning when he singled up the middle to score Brady Picarelli. Melton had a big night out of the 9-hole collecting 3 hits and an RBI.

Puckett reached base four times, collecting three hits and two RBIs.

As a team, the Jags hit .350 and totaled 14 hits on the night. However, South Alabama did not take full advantage of its opportunities throughout the night as they left 17 runners on base.

It was a game to forget for the Crimson Tide defensively, as they had five errors on the night and let up five unearned runs. Projected top-10 overall pick Justin Lebron had a good night at the plate, going 2-4 with a double, but Lebron also had one of those aforementioned errors that put a run on the board for the Jags.

The game also marked the 37th anniversary of when South Alabama won its first and only game in the NCAA tournament, when the Jags defeated the Crimson Tide on a last-second 3-pointer by Jeff Hodge. The 3-pointer came to be known as “The Shot that Rolled the Tide.”
