Legendary UMS Wright Bulldogs Head Coach Terry Curtis Announces Retirement

High school football in Mobile received a shocking piece of breaking news this week when legendary UMS Wright Bulldogs head coach Terry Curtis was set to announce his retirement, which he made official at a press conference on Tuesday.

Curtis, who has been in coaching for over 50 years but with UMS Wright for the better part of the last three decades, has led the Bulldogs to eight state titles and 284 victories during his 26 years as head coach.

A head coach in Alabama for 36 years, Curtis was the all-time wins leader in the state with an overall record of 361-105 before being passed by Danny Horn of Central Clay County this season.

While Horn may have the record however, Curtis’ team upset a heavily favored Clay County team in the first round of the playoffs last year on the road by a score of 7-0. Curtis finishes with a 1-0 record all time against Horn, something he was sure to remind local media of during the Tuesday press conference:

It remains to be seen who the Bulldogs will hire as his successor, but we know now it will be a new era on Old Shell Road as one of the most successful and historic programs in the area has finally decided to hang up the whistle.
