It was another tough night for the Big XII conference

Seven schools had more players drafted in Thursday night’s NFL draft than the entire Big XII.

  • More quarterbacks from Los Angeles were drafted than the entire Big XII.
  • More players fathered by Ferrell Edmunds were drafted in the first round than the entire Big XII.
  • More players from the Mountain West Conference were drafted than the entire Big XII.
  • More players from the Notre Dame offensive line were drafted than the entire Big XII.

The Big XII did tie Conference USA and the America Conference by having one player chosen Thursday night. After Baker Mayfield went No. 1 overall to the Cleveland Browns, the Big XII was not heard from again.

And don’t think it doesn’t matter when projecting which teams and conferences are going to have success in the future. Seven first-rounders played in January’s national championship game. You can bet that Nick Saban with four picks and Kirby Smart with three are letting current recruits know who led the parade of future millionaires Thursday night.

Overall, the SEC led the way with 10 selections in the first round. The ACC was next with six.

It’s no surprise that those are the only conferences to play for the national championship in the playoff era. Thursday night’s results will only serve to help extend that streak.
