High school football season is officially BACK on the Gulf Coast with our next stop of the Greer’s Markets Game of the Week taking us Spanish Fort High School for their huge region game against Saraland!
Both teams are off to strong starts, with the hosting Toros sitting at 2-1 after a loss two weeks ago against Theodore before getting back on the right track last week with a big win against Baldwin County along with a huge win over Fairhope back during the first week of the season.
The Spartans on the other hand picked up right where they left off, outscoring opponents 106-20 with wins over Jackson, Blount, and Gulf Shores. This is one of the biggest rivalries in the area, but Saraland has dominated the last couple of years with wins of 42-17 last season, 49-7 in 2023, 35-24 in 2022, and 28-16 in 2021.
Spanish Fort’s last victory over the Spartans came back in 2020, and head coach Chase Smith is trying to best Jeff Kelly for the first time since arriving on The Hill four years ago.
The Toros actually lead the all-time series by a score of 8-6, however if they can’t figure out a way to stop Saraland’s new quarterback Jamison Roberts, they could pull that series one win away from being even.
These two squads have been at the top of 6A Region 1 for a long time now, and while it’s too early in the season to say this could decide the region — especially with the way Theodore is playing right now — that is the way things have played out for a minute now.
It should be a phenomenal night of football on Friday at Spanish Fort, and it’s still the early portion of what will be a huge schedule for our WNSP crew this season!
Be sure to tune into the broadcast from Michael Brauner and Brian Genard on 105.5 WNSP or on the Sound of Mobile app!
