If you tuned in to watch the Kentucky-Monmouth basketball game Saturday at Madison Square Garden, I know one of two things about you. Either you’re a true college basketball junkie or you’re a devoted fan of one of those teams.
You may or may not care anything about the New York Yankees, but clearly you didn’t tune in to hear about the Yankees during the baseball offseason.
Yet, ESPNU decided to spend exactly 5 full minutes of game time — beginning with 7:58 left in the first half — interviewing Yankees manager Aaron Boone about the Yankees and their pursuit of Giancarlo Stanton.
Come on ESPN, Tighten Up.
This is exactly the kind of diversion I dred during the upcoming bowl season. During the Tennessee game they’ll interview Peyton Manning. During the Independence Bowl they’ll interview Willie Taggert when I’m interested in watching Southern Miss and Florida State. During the Texas Bowl they will interview Matthew McConaughey about his latest project.
The greatest response I saw on Twitter Saturday was from a Kentucky fan who wrote “hey, there’s a Kentucky basketball game going on in the background of the New York Yankees press conference.”
Look, I’ve got nothing against the Yankees. But if I want Yankees information I know where to find it — and it’s not during a Monmouth-Kentucky basketball game.
