Week seven has come and gone on the Gulf Coast, and with it, high school football season is officially in full swing with the best time of year that we all wait for finally now here!
Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Green and Phillips Pigskin Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.
This week, the honor went to Mary G. Montgomery Vikings running back Kamron Smith, who had a huge night in MGM’s rivalry victory over the Baker Hornets by a score of 20-10. It was a huge night for Smith, who had 227 yards on 37 carries as well as two touchdowns in addition to a huge third down catch late in the game to keep a critical drive going.
“He did a great job for us,” MGM head coach Alex Page said. “It was needed Friday night. He was definitely the hot hand and wanted the ball and the team trusts him. Over the past two games he’s rushed for a total of 487 yards, really chewing up those yards on the ground the last two weeks.”
It was the third victory of the season for the Vikings, who sit at 3-3 despite their lack of eligibility for the postseason and after falling to Baker last year, the Semmes faithful were thrilled to see MGM back in the win column for the Battle of West Mobile.
With still some huge games left against teams like Davidson, Daphne, Foley and Theodore, it’s a chance for the Vikings to finish the season on the right note and send a message to the rest of the area that this program will be back soon.
Congratulations to Smith and the entire MGM team and best of luck the rest of the season!
