Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this week’s edition, we caught up with Baker Hornets head coach Eric Scott who is trying to get things going for his team after a bye week coming off a very close defeat the week prior in a 48-45 thriller against Foley. This week, Scott’s team will be taking on Mary G. Montgomery in a major rivalry showdown for the Battle of West Mobile.
The Hornets are 2-3 and 2-2 in the region but have been extremely close, losing both the region games by just a field goal.
“We’re finding our stride, starting to figure things out on offense,” Scott said before talking about some of the struggles on the defensive side of the ball.
“Defensively we have had to make some personnel changes and have had to get some guys some experience. We have inexperience in key places and it’s showed up in some big spots this season. We definitely have some things we have to clean up on that side, but the guys have been real positive and eager to improve. The program is in solid shape and we’re excited about the future.”
After MGM, the Hornets will take on both Fairhope and Robertsdale as they try to lock up a spot in the postseason. This is a young Baker team, but Scott believes they can hit their stride and still be able to make a playoff run.
