Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this week’s edition, we caught up with Elberta Warriors head coach Joel Williams, who is going to try to get their first victory this week on the road against Chickasaw. It’s been a rough go of it for the program in a Class 5A Region 1 and the Warriors have been a little overmatched against teams like Theodore and Spanish Fort with still Saraland and Gulf Shores on deck.
Williams is not letting that get him or his team down though, expressing optimism that they are building for the future in his second season in charge of the program.
“We’re just real young. We got here and numbers were low, there were 28 players. Now we have 70 on varsity,” Williams said. “When we finish practice it looks like a middle school car line because most of our players can’t drive yet. We got thrown into a region we probably should not be playing in, but that’s just the adversity of life.
“What we talk about all the time in our program is building a rock foundation and not a sand foundation…we’re building on so many things other than wins and losses. Kids act and do as their leaders do, so I can’t come in acting pessimistic.”
Elberta may not win a whole lot of games this season, but Williams believes he is helping a team made up almost exclusively of underclassmen build for the future, and as the numbers start to tick up, it’s clear he is in it for the long haul.
