Every week on the Tobias & Comer Coaches’ Corner, Mark, Lee and Michael will talk to a local area high school coach to get the scoop on what’s going on with their team, how our local schools are faring on their respective pushes to bring Blue Maps back to the Gulf Coast, and everything in between.
In this edition, we were joined by BC Rain Red Raiders head coach Lawrence Yelding ahead of their opening game this Friday night against Baldwin County before region play getting started in 4A Region 1 in week three against Williamson.
Asked about the status of the program and whether or not he thinks they will be able to make some real noise this year, Yelding offered some optimism but knows the team also has a whole lot of work to do
“We’re getting there, it’s a process day by day, we talk about stacking days like many programs do. We have made some strides,” he said.
The most exciting development for the team may the healthy return of three-star wide receiver Darryl Blackmon Jr., who is ready to become a household name on the Gulf Coast in his junior year after missing most of last season following an injury suffered during a 7 on 7 event.
Blackmon might just be one of the best pass catchers in the area, and now he will help the Red Raiders try to win some games with new quarterback Aiden Withers, a basketball star who Yelding described as perhaps the most dangerous dual threat he has had in a long line of great quarterbacks.
Withers, who 50 points in a basketball game last year, is coming along slowly but surely and while there may be a bit of a learning curve, there’s optimism that he can have a great year.
“We’ve just gotta get him caught up to speed on what it is we need him to do,” Yelding said.
Best of luck to the Red Raiders this season!
