High school football season is officially BACK on the Gulf Coast, and the seventh week of the year brought some very exciting action to the area as teams got back on the field with a great number of them continuing play in their respective regions.
Every week during the season, Pigskin Pete and his crew on the Friday night Joe Bullard Chevrolet Scoreboard show select an athlete from one of the teams that we cover and name them the Bryant Bank Player of the Week for their outstanding performance and helping their team to get the victory.
This week, the honor went to St. Michael Cardinals quarterback Gunner Rivers after his huge performance against No. 1 ranked Jackson in 4A to help his team grab the biggest win of the season in the area so far.
The No. 2 ranked Cardinals defeated the Aggies 49-39 on the road behind a performance from Rivers that saw him throw for 274 yards and five touchdowns while completing 25 of his 38 passing attempts. The win not only avenges last year’s semifinal defeat, but it also allows St. Michael to move to 6-0 and take complete control of 6A Region 1.
Next week, they will take on 5-1 Mobile Christian in another massive region game in which the Cardinals will try to push things to the brink.
Congratulations to Rivers and the entire St. Michael team team on taking home this week’s version of the prestigious award!
