High school football is officially back on the Gulf Coast!
Every week on the Pigskin Pete Scoreboard show, our Friday night crew will be naming the Joe Bullard Team/Coach of the Week, given to the team and coach that had the best performance of the week in the face of adversity in our coverage area across the Gulf Coast.
This week for the first slate of the season, the big honor is bestowed upon the Mary G. Montgomery Vikings and their head coach Zach Golson. Entering the year following an undefeated 7A regular season last year, the Vikings were looking to avenge their one blemish from the regular season, a season-opening overtime loss to the Pace Patriots out of Florida.
In this year’s edition though, MGM had their home crowd in Semmes behind them.
As a result, they were able to hold on in a 34-21 thriller as Golson guided his team to a huge start looking to defend their region title. Ultimately though, championships are decided in region play, and Golson would be the first to tell you that fact.
The Vikings hit the road this Friday for a trip to Gulf Shores for one more non-region game before their showdown on the road against Daphne to begin region play a couple weeks from now.
Golson has completely revitalized the MGM program now in his fourth year on the job, and the win over Pace was just the latest example that this is one of the premiere football destinations in the state of Alabama.
Congratulations to the Mary G. Montgomery Vikings and head coach Zach Golson on being named this week’s Joe Bullard Chevrolet Team/Coach of the Week and best of luck in their 2025 season!
