The spoils of speed

There’s rich. Then there’s own-your-own-island rich.

Former Washington Huskies wide receiver John Ross is going to be rich in a few months, but he missed on the chance to be own-your-own-island rich right away.

Ross set the official NFL combine record in the 40-yard dash Saturday, recording a time of 4.22 seconds. That beat the previous record of 4.24 set by Chris Johnson in 2008.

Adidas had offered any player at the combine his very own island if he broke the record while wearing Adidas shoes.

Ross chose to wear Nike, in part because “I can’t swim that well. And I don’t own a boat.”

But don’t fret for Ross. After recording the blazing time, he immediately signed a shoe deal with Nike.

Besides, the record will always be in dispute. Bo Jackson reportedly ran a 4.13 in 1986, but that was before electronic timing and more accurate results.
