Nick Saban will hire someone with good credentials as an offensive coordinator to replace Steve Sarkisian, but quality experience as an offensive coordinator–or even play caller–aren’t the top job requirements.<\/p>\n
When Saban announces the newest member to his Alabama coaching the key resume line to look at will be success as a quarterbacks coach.<\/p>\n
The person who succeeds Sarkisian is going to walk into a quarterbacks meeting room filled with a bunch of kids, the majority of whom aren’t old enough to vote.<\/p>\n
Alabama’s depth chart at quarterback in 2017 is going to consist of one true sophomore and two true freshmen.<\/p>\n
Yes, there is talent among SEC Offensive Player of the Year Jalen Hurts, 5-star Hawaiian recruit Tua Tagovailoa and Wing-T trained Florida native Mac Jones.<\/p>\n
But probably no team in the country, certainly no championship contender, is more in need of a coach who can develop young quarterbacks.<\/p>\n
That’s why Saban’s next hire will be much less about coordinating and much more about teaching.<\/p>\n
